Terms of service
Last updated 8 September 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and MRX Software LLC ("we", "us") covering your use of TabSplitter. By signing in, or by opening a share link and claiming items on someone's tab, you agree to them. If you don't, don't use it.
What TabSplitter does — and does not do
TabSplitter works out who owes what on a shared bill. You enter the line items, tax and tip; it divides each item among the people who claimed it, apportions tax and tip against what each person ordered, and shows the smallest set of payments that settles up.
We do not move money between you and anyone else. TabSplitter is not a bank, a payment processor, a money transmitter, or an escrow service. It performs a calculation and shows you the result. Actually paying each other back happens entirely outside TabSplitter, by whatever means you choose, and any debt between diners is between them. A Venmo or Cash App button we show you, if someone's added a handle, only opens Venmo's or Cash App's own app or site with the amount pre-filled — the payment itself happens there, on their terms, not ours.
Check the numbers. Prices and totals are whatever was entered, and a receipt can be mistyped. The arithmetic is designed to be exact — no bill gains or loses a cent passing through it — but it can only be as right as its inputs, and it is a convenience rather than a source of truth. Settle against the actual receipt.
Your account
Accounts are created and accessed by a one-time code emailed to your address, or by signing in with Google where that's offered; there is no password either way. That makes access to your email inbox — or your Google account — the thing that protects your account, so keep it secure. Tell us promptly if you think someone else has used your account.
You need to be old enough to enter a contract where you live, and at least 13.
Share links, guests, and co-owners
Each tab has a share link. That link is the key to the tab: anyone holding it can see the items, the names, the amounts, and the activity log, and can claim items or add themselves. The receipt photo itself is different: only the account that scanned it can see it — not guests, and not co-owners. You decide who gets the link, and you are responsible for that choice.
If you claim items through someone else's link, these terms apply to you too, even without an account. Don't put anything on a tab you wouldn't want everyone else holding the link to see.
A tab's owner can also add another TabSplitter account as a co-owner — full edit rights on the tab, the same as the owner has, short of deleting the tab or managing who else owns it. Adding someone as a co-owner is a decision you're responsible for, the same as handing out the share link.
Trips
A trip groups several tabs and their combined settle-up under one roster. Like a tab, a trip has a share link, and anyone holding it can join the roster, see every tab in the trip, and mark its combined settle-up paid — without an account. Someone who opens the link while signed in becomes a member: the trip appears in their own list and they can start tabs inside it, which they own the same as any tab they start. Any member can add or invite people to the trip and put a tab of their own into it; everyone on a trip is put on each of its tabs that hasn't been settled, and anyone added to one of its tabs joins the trip. Renaming or deleting a trip, removing people from it, and taking a tab out of it stay with its owner — whoever created it, or, if that account is deleted, the member who joined earliest — though a tab's own owner can always take their tab back out. Deleting a trip removes its roster and settle-up but does not delete the tabs started inside it.
Your content
Receipt photos, a profile picture, item names, and everything else you enter stay yours. You give us only the permission needed to run the service — to store that content, and to show it to whoever it's meant for: the items, names and amounts to the other people on a tab and anyone holding its share link; a receipt photo only to the account that took it; a profile picture only to you; and any uploaded photo to a site administrator reviewing it under the policy below. Where a deployment is configured to read receipts with Claude, the photo is also sent to Anthropic for that transcription. We don't use your content for anything else.
Only upload a receipt you're entitled to photograph or a photo of yourself, and don't upload anything unlawful, anything containing someone else's personal information you have no business sharing, or — this bears saying plainly — any image that sexually exploits a minor.
We remove unlawful images the moment we become aware of them and act on the account behind the upload, up to closing it — see "Acceptable use" and "Ending things" below. Where US federal law requires it, this includes reporting the material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC); see our privacy policy for what that involves. We may also turn off either upload feature entirely, for everyone, at any time.
Premium
TabSplitter is free, in full — every feature, including scanning a receipt. Premium is not currently offered; there is no subscription to buy. If that changes, this section describes how it would work:
- Premium would be a subscription that renews automatically at the interval and price shown at checkout, until you cancel.
- Payment would be handled by Stripe, and their terms would cover the payment itself. We would never see or store your card details.
- You would be able to cancel at any time from your account page. Cancelling would stop the next renewal — you'd keep Premium until the end of the period already paid for. We wouldn't refund partial periods unless the law where you live requires it.
- If a payment failed, Stripe would retry for a while, with access left on in the meantime. If it was never resolved, the account would return to free.
- If we changed the price, we'd tell you before it applied to a renewal, and you'd be able to cancel instead.
- Deleting your account would cancel any subscription along with it.
Acceptable use
Don't:
- break into accounts or tabs that aren't yours, or hunt for share links you weren't given;
- probe, overload, or disrupt the service, or work around its limits;
- use it to harass anyone, or to store unlawful material of any kind;
- upload, store, or attempt to upload any image that sexually exploits a minor — see "Your content" above for what happens when we find one;
- scrape or resell it, or pass off its output as your own product.
Availability
We'll do our best to keep TabSplitter running, but it's provided as-is, without any warranty. We don't promise it will be available at any given moment, free of bugs, or that data will never be lost. Features may change or be withdrawn.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profits or data, or for any dispute between you and the other people on a tab. Where we are liable, our total liability is capped at what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim — which, if you're on the free tier, is nothing.
Nothing here limits liability that legally cannot be limited, including for fraud. Some places don't allow these exclusions, in which case they don't apply to you.
Ending things
You can stop at any time by deleting your account from your account page. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts other people or the service at risk. If we close your account without cause, we'll refund the unused part of any subscription.
Changes
We may update these terms. If a change matters, we'll update the date above and, for significant changes affecting subscribers, give notice before it takes effect. Continuing to use TabSplitter after that means you accept the new terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and disputes belong to the courts there. If you're a consumer elsewhere, this doesn't take away rights your local law gives you.
